Do you ever wonder if what you are going through is normal? Or if the questions you have about your relationship are common? Often what people are experiencing is more common than it feels like when you’re going through it. People have a hard time talking about what is going on in their relationship and so one of the most common places to turn is to google. Google is great, except that often the information out there isn’t written by people who are actual experts in the field. This is an issue because then sometimes we get information that may not always be the most accurate or that may actually worsen the very issues we are trying to make amends to.
I found this article about the most popular google searches related to relationships from 2017. As a relationship therapist, I was actually a bit surprised by the answers. The ones I do see in my office are number 3,5,7,and 9 with number 5 being the one people most often come in for.
What I was really surprised to not see was “How do I improve my communication in my relationship?” That is probably the most common issue people who come into my office talk to me about. Learning how to talk about you are feeling, things you think about, how life affects you and what is or isn’t working for you in your relationship is not only difficult but also really vulnerable. Communication, in a lot of ways, is how we get through all of the other topics in the article and how we find our way forward in relationships.
What do you think? Do any of the topics raised in this google article stand out for you? Is there a different topic you feel is even more relevant? Let me know in the section below
